Title: Respiratory Therapist Department: Respiratory
General summary
Under the supervision of the cardiopulmonary Services Medical Director and Department Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician’s orders, protocols, department policies and procedures.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert to and assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery.
2. Administers various respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
3. Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
4. Able to assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation. Makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
5. Performs invasive and non-invasive diagnostics including oximetry, and arterial blood gas.
6. Performs CPR as required, including maintaining the airway.
7. Documents all the pertinent data on the patient’s medical record following completion of any service.
8. Performs EKGs, reports to physicians who requested them and files report according to department procedures.
9. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports a culture of quality and safety.
10. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
11. Communication with physicians and other hospital staff involved in patient’s care.
12. Participates in multi-disciplinary team.
13. Maintains confidentiality.
14. Team work and positive attitude.
15. Works collaboratively with physicians, specifically with pulmonologist.
Educational requirements
1. Current State of Michigan Respiratory Therapist Licensure
2. Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Therapy
3. Current Registered Respiratory Therapy certification (Must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
Experience
Three or more years of previous experience in all aspects of cardiopulmonary services.
Specific requirements
Current ACLS and BLS certification
